A comment about the VOIP 11:06 AM

In the article, it said that the internet could completely replace the phone because of the development of Skype. Indeed, the free service of Skype is the most threat of the phone. But in my opinion, it still takes time to kill it, and to let it disappear is more difficult by now.

The most important point is that not all people has the demand to use a computer but they may want to make a phone call. Furthermore, the using type of computers is "personal" computer, that means, if everyone want to connect others with internet, there should be that many computers and cable lines unless the computer is public. In this case, the payment may not be cheaper than applying for a phone.

See? They just convert the cost from the phone to the internet. While Skype's free service looks like a good deal, we have to pay for computer itself first. So we just can serve the free talk as an additional benefit of internet.

The words above are just the environment nowaday. Adults may use computer for work, but teenagers use for play or communication after school. Since the computers are more and more popular in youths, computers will prevail when they grow up. The prices of them are also cheaper and cheaper. Until then, the price of the telephone have to reduce or they won't be competitive with internet, and the only advantage of telephone is working when blackout.

However, this is just the case of home phone. There is another type of phones that is hard to beat called cell phone. You can see that a computer, even a notebook, is much bigger than a cell phone. The convenience of a cell is hard to be replace by now. To be brief, we can hardly chat with others while walking on the street, and we have to put it on hand. We even cannot find them when their notebooks are closed.

So when I saw the article that indicate the internet phone lead the slow death of traditional telephone, well, I agree with that, but not now. Before computers conquer every person in the world and people cannot live without them, the phone could hardly be killed.

Of course, if someday the size of notebook can as small as the cell phone, maybe phone will completely disappear at that time I think.

I agree that Skype will not completely do away with the telephone; it is only an improvement, an evolution of the phone. Until people have equal technological access, there will be no absolute for doing away with a specific technology.

I agree that the cell phone is hard to beat! It has already beat out the home "land line" phone in our house. If we did not need the phone access for an emergency number to put on hospital paperwork, business paperwork we would not have it!
